All-electric Uber Green launches in London, Australia takes different approach

Ride-sharing service Uber will now allow its London customers to select an electric vehicle (EV) for their next trip with the UK launch of Uber Green – but Australian customers are still a way off receiving the same service. Uber Green – which is already offered throughout most of North America and parts of Europe – is an option on the Uber app that allows users to select fully-electric cars for roughly the same fare as petrol, hybrid and diesel cars.

Lyft ride-sharing company to go all-electric by 2030

US ride-sharing and rental car company Lyft will convert its entire fleet to electric vehicles by 2030, according to overseas reports. The company says it will “aggressively promote” and “help drivers access incentive funds” for electric vehicles, but will not provide “direct financial support”, a report by the Reuters news agency says. As of today, electric vehicles comprise less than one per cent of Lyft’s fleet. The company said it had 2 million drivers in its Q3 report in 2019.

Ride-share services like Uber produce more carbon emissions than private cars, study finds

Ride-sharing or ride-hailing services like Uber contribute more CO2 emissions to the atmosphere than their private car counterparts, according to a new scientific report. In the paper Ride-Hailing’s Climate Risks: Steering a Growing Industry Toward a Clean Transportation Future, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) found the use of these services in the United States creates an estimated 69 per cent more pollution than the trips they displace.

Uber adopts five-star car safety policy but not newer vehicles

Uber passengers will soon have the benefit of riding only in cars with a five-star safety rating – however most cars will still be allowed to be up to 10 years old. Ride sharing service Uber has announced it will join Australian governments and leading fleet operators by adopting a policy of only having cars with five-star ANCAP safety standards.

BMW launches Uber rival in the US

BMW has updated its ReachNow app to offer both car-sharing and ride-hailing, although the latter is only available in Seattle right now. In what's claimed to be an industry first, residents of Microsoft's home town can now hire a car or ask for a ride "from a professional driver" all within the same smartphone application. With the new service, dubbed ReachNow Ride, users can hail a ride immediately, or schedule a driver to arrive any time between 20 minutes and seven days in advance.
