Teens car-jack vehicle after booking it through a ride-share app

Police have arrested and charged three teenage boys after they allegedly car-jacked a vehicle they booked through a ride-share app.

Victoria Police officers have charged three teenagers in Reservoir in Melbourne's north after allegedly car-jacking a ride-share vehicle they summoned via a smartphone app.

Victoria Police confirmed to Drive the alleged offenders booked the vehicle on a smartphone in the early hours of Thursday morning, before allegedly producing weapons and assaulting the 28-year-old driver.

Police located the stolen vehicle on Chapel Street in Prahran, before the Air Wing tracked the car through multiple suburbs to Glen Waverley where one boy allegedly exited the vehicle and was arrested.

Police allege the two teenagers initially evaded police, but were eventually arrested in Berwick – more than 60 kilometres from where the alleged car-jacking occurred.

One 16-year-old boy was bailed to appear at a children's court at a later date, while a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were presented directly to court.

It's not known whether police used the ride-share app to identify or track the alleged offenders – or whether it will be used as evidence – given the app requires the personal details of the customer before a booking is placed.
