Toyota HiLux DPF drama update

DODGY diesels and a long list of recalls won’t dent Toyota’s reputation for quality and reliability -- the company claims -- even though a leading law firm is considering taking a class action on behalf of more than 245,000 customers across Australia with potentially faulty vehicles...

Class action against Toyota over DPF issues being considered

Toyota Australia is facing a class action lawsuit over issues with the Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) in 2015-18 HiLux, Prado and Fortuner vehicles powered by the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine. According to the legal firm considering the claim, its clients have experienced "increased fuel consumption and a loss of power of the vehicle" because "hard deposits accumulating on the DPF oxidisation catalyst" stop it reaching the necessary temperature...

2018 Toyota LandCruiser Prado pricing and specs

The Toyota LandCruiser Prado - Australia's biggest-selling large SUV - has been given a swathe of price cuts yet picked up way more safety equipment and some offroad-focused tweaks to boot. Bidding to make the strong stronger, Toyota has also bumped the braked-trailer towing capacity on all auto versions to 3000kg - sure to delight grey nomads, horse trainers and mine-site fleet buyers at the same time - put a rear diff-lock on the GLX auto and VX grades, and ditched the V6 petrol engine altogether...

Toyota SUV comparison: Fortuner v Kluger v Prado

We’re always amazed at just how many SUVs Toyota seems to sell, and there’s good reason for that – people know the brand, know the reputation, and know they’ve got options to choose from. With that in mind, we decided to gather three of the Japanese brand’s seven-seat SUVs to put them to the test: the Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Kluger, and Toyota LandCruiser Prado...

Australia's top SUV brands

It's hardly a secret at this point that SUVs are the driving force behind the Australian new vehicle market - even though the top two vehicles are actually utes. In 2017, these (often nominally) higher-riding options have in fact eclipsed sales of regular passenger vehicles - by which we mean sedans, hatches, wagons, people-movers and sports cars...

SUV sales overtake passenger cars

February 2017 sales figures show that vehicles classified as SUVs outsold passenger cars in Australia over the course of a whole month, for the first time, representing a notable market shift. That said, the gap between passenger cars — sedans, hatches, wagons, coupes, convertibles and people-movers — and higher-riding SUVs has been narrowing, so this development was just a matter of time...

Toyota FJ Cruiser production to end in August

The rugged and retro-inspired Toyota FJ Cruiser off-roader is being discontinued over the next few months, as Japanese production ceases in August after a decade-plus run. Launched late in Australia in 2011, the body-on-frame FJ Cruiser has become something of a cult car, with more than 11,000 sold so far at a rate of 180 units per month — much higher than first expected...
