Toyota reports record-setting annual sales of 10.3 million vehicles

Japanese car giant Toyota has reported a record 10.31 million vehicle sales (10,309,457) for the 2024 Japanese fiscal year, the most annual sales from any one car brand ever.

The result, surpassing the 10 million unit mark in a financial year for the first time on record, is an increase of 7.3 per cent on Toyota's FY23 sales result.

The figures (which include Lexus models) note that 85.16 per cent of sales are from countries outside Japan, with a staggering 1,529,818 Toyota/Lexus vehicles sold in the brand's home nation alone.

Note that the Japanese financial year runs from 1 April to 31 March.

Toyota sales in Japan have largely plateaued over the last dozen years, with the FY14 result of 1.64m vehicles the most recent peak.

Of the 8.8m sales in other markets, North America accounts for 31.1 per cent whereas the rest of Asia (including China) reports 37.6 per cent of Toyota's global result.

Despite being the top-selling brand with a significant margin, Australia's 246,396 sales are a paltry 2.8 per cent of the total FY24 result.

Sales of hybrid vehicles accounted for 33.2 per cent of the total.

Toyota vehicles still remain in high demand globally, with data supplied by Toyota also showing that production of Toyota vehicles is now less than the annual sales volume, with FY24 reporting that 9.98 million vehicles were built, 96.7 per cent of the volume of cars sold.

This has improved from production accounting for only 90 per cent of global sales in 2020, with Toyota recently announcing that wait times for Australian buyers had reduced on its most popular models from years, to just a few months.
