2020 Nissan Leaf revealed for Japan

Nissan has revealed a raft of small updates for its electric Leaf hatchback in Japan, but they haven't been confirmed for Australia. The 2020 Leaf, which lobs during February in Japan, will gain an updated ProPilot semi-autonomous driver assist suite to "reduce driver fatigue and stress".

Japan to trial autonomous cars during the 2020 Olympics

Autonomous vehicle trials before and during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will form part of the Japanese government's plan to have self-driving cars on sale by the middle of the next decade. Seigo Kuzumaki, head of the Japanese government’s self-driving car program, told Bloomberg it will run an autonomous car trial around competition sites in the week leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Infiniti HQ moves back to Japan

Infiniti will leave its current Hong Kong headquarters by the middle of 2020, and relocate to Yokohama, Japan, alongside its Nissan parent. Infiniti says rejoining the mothership will make the brand better integrated into Nissan's design, research and manufacturing systems. It also believes the move will result in "more operational efficiencies by sharing architecture, technologies and back-office functions", which should help it compete in a "hyper-competitive, disruptive industry".

Toyota Kinto subscription service launched in Japan

Initially there will be two Kinto plans to choose from: Kinto One for Toyota vehicles, and Kinto Select offering only Lexus cars. At launch only five Toyota vehicles will be available through Kinto One: Prius, Corolla Sport, Alphard, Vellfire, and Crown. Prices for 36 month subscription vary depending on the vehicle, with the Prius starting at ¥49,788 ($626) per month, and topping out at ¥106,920 ($1345) for the Crown.

Nissan, Ghosn, Kelly indicted over under-reported pay

Prosecutors in Tokyo have indicted Carlos Ghosn, Greg Kelly and Nissan for under-reporting Ghosn's pay in official filings. According to NHK and other Japanese news outlets, prosecutors allege Ghosn's compensation package was understated by up to ¥5 billion ($60 million) over the five-year period ending in the 2014 Japanese financial year.
