GM sues Fiat Chrysler for bribing labour union

General Motors (GM) has filed a lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler (FCA), claiming the rival's bribery of officials from the United Auto Workers (UAW) union caused it serious financial damage. GM alleges FCA instigated a “multi-year pattern of corruption” to “undermine the integrity of the collective bargaining process and cause GM substantial damages".

American GM workers strike

Around 49,000 workers at General Motors plants across the United States have gone on strike after negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and the automaker broke down over the weekend. This is the first nationwide strike against GM since 2007, when the automaker was trying to reduce its pension and healthcare burden as part of an effort to stave off bankruptcy.

Buick crossover spied in Europe

A large Buick crossover has been spied undergoing hot weather testing in southern Europe. Up front the car sports a prominent set of LED driving lights in the shape of a tipped over L. These lights sit above a wide chrome bar joined to an oversized grille. The main headlight unit sits lower in the front fascia, and will likely be disguised to some degree. The crossover has smooth flanks, while the rear features a wide chrome bar joining up the two sets of tail-lights.

GM to close up to five factories in the US, slash jobs

General Motors has announced plans to reduce salaried staff in the US by 15 per cent, and could close up to five factories there. The company has "unallocated" production from three car factories (Oshawa, Detroit-Hamtramck and Lordstown), and two engine and transmission plants (Baltimore and Warren) after 2019.

Australia might not be the manufacturing epicentre of its own automotive ecosystem anymore, but there was once a time when being ‘Australia’s own’ was the only chance car brands had at success. There’s no doubt some car names have become icons unto themselves, though – to the point where they almost overshadow the brands that delivered them. Ford and Holden, for example, are almost second-fiddle to the massive presence of the Falcon and Commodore badges – or at least they once were.
