Alpina: X7-based mule spied, Australian arm interested

Darcy Foster • Alpina has its eye on an upcoming BMW X7-based model for Australia, based on the success of its smaller XD3. The mid-sized XD3 SUV, which launched locally earlier this year as a rival to the Audi SQ5, has seen “good initial interest” locally, according to an Alpina Australia spokesperson. “It’s natural that we will seriously consider any further SUV options that are made available in [right-hand drive],” the spokesperson told CarAdvice.

What's available varies based on model; most of the X5 and X7 upgrades are style focused, whereas the 'sportier' X6 is also offered with the brakes from the X5 and X6 M with bigger, heavily ventilated discs and calipers finished in red. The bigger brakes can be coupled with a set of 22-inch alloy wheels finished in matte or gloss black.

BMW X5, X6 and X7 tow rating upped to 3.5 tonnes

BMW has its sights set on grey nomads, with a factory-fit package boosting the towing capacity of its X5 and X7 to 3500kg. The option costs $2500 and must be installed at the factory, meaning owners will need to tick the right boxes to utilise their car's full braked-towing capacity. An Australian tongue, electrical connector and tow ball adds another $700 to the option price.
