BMW defends new design language

BMW is defending its controversial decision to use considerably larger versions of its classic double-kidney grille. Product boss Peter Henrich told Autocar the new design language has received “very positive” feedback and that he was “convinced” the new direction was wise. Under design director Adrian van Hooydonk, BMW grilles have increased in size, starting with the refreshed 7 Series and all-new X7.

BMW has released its latest set of M Performance add-ons, allowing owners to give their X5, X6 and X7 a racier look. What's available varies based on model; most of the X5 and X7 upgrades are style focused, whereas the 'sportier' X6 is also offered with the brakes from the X5 and X6 M with bigger, heavily ventilated discs and calipers finished in red. The bigger brakes can be coupled with a set of 22-inch alloy wheels finished in matte or gloss black.

2020 BMW X7 M50i here in Q4 from $171,900

BMW Australia has confirmed the V8-powered X7 M50i xDrive will be launching Down Under during the fourth quarter, priced from $171,900 plus on-road costs. Taking over performance flagship duties from the temporarily-discontinued M50d quad-turbo diesel, the M50i swaps out the boosted six-cylinder turbo-diesel for a stonking 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 390kW (@5500-6000rpm) and 750Nm (@1800-4600rpm).

2020 BMW X5 M50i, X7 M50i unveiled

The range-topping BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i were unveiled overnight, ahead of an anticipated Australian launch before the end of the year. Like the M850i xDrive, both crossovers are powered by a 4.4-litre V8 with two turbochargers located within the V. The engine is said to make 390kW of power between 5500 and 6000rpm, and 750Nm between 1800rpm and 4600rpm. All of that is channelled to the ground via an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

2019 BMW X7 pricing and specs

The 2019 BMW X7 will launch in Australia with a two-model lineup, both powered by diesel engines, and the most affordable variant available from the get-go. It's a change from recent policy, where BMW would launch a more expensive, mid-grade variant and then add the price leader after the initial launch.
