BMW Australia has confirmed the V8-powered X7 M50i xDrive will be launching Down Under during the fourth quarter, priced from $171,900 plus on-road costs.

Taking over performance flagship duties from the temporarily-discontinued M50d quad-turbo diesel, the M50i swaps out the boosted six-cylinder turbo-diesel for a stonking 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 developing 390kW (@5500-6000rpm) and 750Nm (@1800-4600rpm).

Drive is sent to a performance-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive system via n eight-speed automatic transmission, making for a claimed 0-100 time of just 4.7 seconds – 0.7 seconds quicker than the M50d.

The boost in power and performance comes at a $2000 price rise over the performance diesel variant, which retailed at $169,900 plus on-road costs before being pulled from sale due to a production shortage.

Speaking with CarAdvice earlier this month, BMW Australia said the X5 and X7 M50d models will "no longer be offered for production with immediate effect".

"Production capacity on X5 M50d and X7 M50d due to global demand has brought about the situation," the company said in a statement.

"We have just commenced production on X5 M50i and X7 M50i which will help alleviate any shortage."

Final specifications for the X7 M50i are still to be confirmed, though we'd guess equipment levels will largely mirror that of the M50d, meaning kit like 22-inch alloy wheels, the M Aerodynamics Package, Cerium Grey exterior accents, Merino leather trim, an Alcantara headliner, five-zone climate control, M Sport exhaust, M Sport differential, premium harman/kardon audio, BMW Laserlight headlights and M Sport brakes should all be standard.

That's on top of the xDrive30d's two-axle adaptive air suspension, comfort access, panoramic sunroof, Driving Assistant Professional package (AEB, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert etc.), surround camera system, 12.3-inch instrument display, 12.3-inch infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless smartphone charging, and head-up display.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for a full pricing and specifications run-down in the lead-up to the X7 M50i's fourth quarter launch.
