Beijing Motor Show 2024: Chery sets its sights on Kia Sorento with Tiggo 9 plug-in hybrid

Chery unveils its next model, the Tiggo 9 PHEV, at the Beijing Motor Show, but it is still unknown if the large SUV will come to Australia.

Chery has lifted the lid on the Tiggo 9 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), a new large SUV expected to battle the Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Kia Sorento.

Uncovered in its home market of China during the 2024 Beijing motor show, the Tiggo 9 PHEV is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and electric motor combination, though total system outputs are still unknown.

Instead, Chery claims the petrol engine alone produces 175kW/385Nm, while the single ‘3DHT’ electric motor outputs 165kW.

Paired to the powertrain is an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it is unclear if the Tiggo 9 PHEV sends drive to a single axle, or both.

Likewise, the Tiggo 9 PHEV’s battery size has not been disclosed, nor has its electric driving range, but Chery states the new model will return a fuel economy figure of 5.2 litres per 100km in less stringent WLTC testing.

The Chinese brand claims a maximum driving range of “beyond” 1400km before the combined battery and fuel tank run dry.

Other notable features of the Tiggo 9 PHEV include a 15.6-inch 2.5K-resolution infotainment touchscreen with centre console-mounted controller, as well as “specially crafted 3D-stitched seats” promising “unmatched comfort”, according to Chery.

From the outside, the Tiggo 9 PHEV sports a closed-off grille to denote its electrified powertrain, as well as slender headlights and flush-fitting door handles.

Filling the wheel arches are 20-inch alloys.

It is still unclear if the Tiggo 9 PHEV will join the Chery Australia line-up alongside the Omoda 5, Tiggo 7 Pro, and upcoming Tiggo 8 Pro due soon, but Drive understands there are a number of international models still under consideration for the local market.
