New Toyota Supra spied again – UPDATE

Update - More images of the rumoured Toyota Supra have been snapped this week. See bottom of article for details

The upcoming sports car from Toyota, rumoured to revive the iconic Supra nameplate, has been spied again this week during cold-weather testing in Europe.

Compared to the development vehicle spied last September, we can now see the coupe's front bumper design more clearly, which appears to draw inspiration from the 2014 Toyota FT-1 concept.

Also staying true to the concept is the coupe's sloping roofline and ducktail spoiler on the bootlid.

This vehicle also has different tail-lights to the prototype spied last year, which are somewhere between the original last Supra and the FT-1 concept in terms of their design.

As previously reported, the new Toyota 'Supra' is the product of the company's joint venture with sports luxury marque BMW, and will share its underpinnings and the majority of its engine line-up with the upcoming Bavarian sports car, dubbed 'Z5'.

While the BMW is said to be offered only as a roadster, the Toyota is likely to be coupe only.

Under the bonnet it's reported a range of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder petrol engines sourced from BMW will be offered, along with a Toyota-developed hybrid drivetrain - according to photographers earlier sightings of the Toyota prototype have sounded like they were in electric mode.

Depending on configuration, power figures upwards of 260kW have been reported in the Japanese and European press. With a target weight just south of 1400kg also reported, any power figure beyond 200kW is sure to give the Supra plenty of pep.

Whether the new car will actually be called the Supra or not is still to be confirmed, but Toyota’s lead engineer for sports cars told CarAdvice in August that he and his colleagues are all pushing for the Supra name.

Update: The prototype for the upcoming Toyota Supra has been spotted again, with these latest photos getting a little more up close and personal with the Japanese company's new sports car.

In these new images, the prototype's heavy camouflage remains, and it's unclear whether the front and rear bumpers are the final product, same with the head- and tail-lights.

Since the last spotting of the pre-production vehicle, renderings of the upcoming sports car have surfaced online, along with a fake brochure which combined images of the FT-1 concept with parts of the original Supra's brochure from the 1990s.

Meanwhile, Car and Driver has reported Toyota will debut or at least preview the new sports car model at this year's Tokyo motor show in October.
