Bentley Bentayga ‘coupe’ in development, possibly ready by 2019

Preliminary work has begun on a Bentley Bentayga "coupe" and it could be on the market by 2019.

Wolfgang Duerheimer, CEO of Bentley, told Automotive News that the company has already begun preliminary design and engineering work of a "coupe" version of Bentayga.

Duerheimer said that design-wise, it was best to "imagine the EXP 10 [Speed 6 coupe concept] as an SUV — it doesn’t look 'old Bentley'".

As such, the new variant is said to feature a fastback rear. If this new Bentayga "coupe" is like other "coupe SUVs" already on sale, such as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, it will also sport five doors and frameless side windows.

The final design has yet to be signed off, with teams still working on competing designs for this sportier Bentayga. The company hopes to attract younger buyers to the marque with this variant of its first ever SUV.

Noting that competitors in the luxury and super-luxury market, including Lamborghini, Maserati and Rolls-Royce, were readying SUVs for launch around 2018 and 2019, Duerheimer said, "When they arrive, I want to have an answer".

The industry publication has been told by Bentley officials that the powers that be at the Volkswagen Group will decide on whether to give final approval to EXP 10 Speed 6 and Bentayga coupe by the end of 2016.
