The first official teaser of the 2015 Audi R8 has been revealed ahead of the car’s debut at the 2015 Geneva motor show in March. And it’s got frickin’ lasers.
The mid-engined Audi R8 will be offered with laser high-beam lights, with the German brand describing the new illumination system — which has been seen previously on the Audi R8 LMX (pictured below) as “the first of a number of technology highlights of the top sports car”.
The headlight system uses LEDs “which can be supplemented by a laser high-beam lighting module as an option”, the brand has confirmed. Audi claims laser lighting “uses high-intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component”.
Audi has confirmed LED headlights will be offered as standard across all R8 models, but the brand claims that “compared to LED high-beam headlights, laser high-beams attain nearly twice the lighting range”.
The headlight assemblies contain one laser module which comprises four high-intensity laser diodes, which bundle and pass through a phosphor convertor that “transforms the blue light into pure white light”.
Expect the new-generation Audi R8 in Audi Australia showrooms in 2016.
