Toyota unveils Supra race car concept

Toyota has unveiled a racing concept of its next performance car at the 2018 Geneva motor show, confirming that the new Supra will go soon go into production. 

The concept fettled by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing department looks ready to take on Le Mans or the Nurburgring, helped by a catalogue of race-spec parts including Brembo brakes, BBS wheels, Michelin tyres and a seat, steering wheel and harnesses supplied by OMP. 

Peer beneath that circuit-inspired veneer and you’ll find Toyota’s next sports car, a relatively compact coupe with a classic front engine, rear-drive layout shared with BMW’s next-generation Z4 Roadster. 

Toyota hasn’t confirmed technical specs for the Supra road car, which is expected to feature a choice of turbocharged four and six-cylinder engines mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. 

But Toyota Australia vice president of sales and marketing, Sean Hanley, says the new “A90” generation Supra will be a “true driver’s car”.

“Supra is one of the most beloved Toyota cars of all time and its nameplate continues to command enormous respect,” he said.

“There has been huge public interest in a modern revival of the Supra legend – and this concept points to a sports car deserving of the famous name.

“Revealing a racing concept ahead of a production model highlights that motorsport is Toyota’s proving ground of choice for high-performance vehicles.

“The GR Supra Racing Concept makes it clear Toyota is developing the Supra to be a true driver's car.”

We don’t know exactly when the road-going production Supra will be revealed - or when it is due arrive in Australia - but it is expected to debut at the Los Angeles motor show before going on-sale in 2019. 

But we can say that the GR Supra Racing Concept will feature as a digital download for Gran Turismo Sport, giving PlayStation pilots a chance to drive the machine well before it goes on sale.
