Peugeot e-2008 electric car price slashed by $25,000

Peugeot can now claim one of Australia's cheapest new electric cars after it cut the e-2008's price by more than a third ahead of an updated model around the corner.

A huge discount of about $25,000 – or close to 40 per cent – has been advertised for one of French car maker Peugeot's first electric cars in Australia to clear stock ahead of an updated model.

The Peugeot e-2008 arrived in Australia late last year priced from $59,990 plus on-road costs – or about $64,000 to $65,500 drive-away, depending on varying registration and stamp duty costs in each state and territory.

Until the end of June, Peugeot is offering new and demonstrator models for just $39,990 drive-away – a saving of close to 40 per cent, or about $25,000.

The saving is so significant it is now cheaper than the base-model petrol 2008, which is priced from about $43,500 to $44,800 drive-away, depending on the state of registration – with less equipment than the electric e-2008.

It is now tied with the MG ZS EV Excite as Australia's cheapest electric SUV, as well as one of the country's most affordable electric cars of any kind.

At its original price, the e-2008 was about $18,000 more expensive than a top-of-the-range MG ZS EV – or $10,000 dearer than the flagship BYD Atto 3 Extended Range, the third-best-selling electric car in Australia.

The discount is likely intended to help clear stock of the current Peugeot e-2008 ahead of the arrival of a facelifted model, with new styling and technology, more power, and a 60km boost in claimed driving range.

The e-2008 launched in Australia last year, more than four years after it was introduced in Europe – and months after the updated version was unveiled overseas.

The facelift has just been applied to the petrol 2008 range in Australia – with cars arriving last month – but the electric equivalent is yet to arrive.

Since the first examples appeared in official data in July 2023, 97 Peugeot e-2008s have been reported as sold in Australia – though a number were registered by Peugeot Australia head office for media evaluation purposes.

It has accounted for 34 per cent of all 2008 sales over the period, though only 31 examples of all 2008 models were sold on average each month – so it is a low base, and monthly deliveries will fluctuate based on shipping schedules.

The limited-time offer for the Peugeot e-2008 is the latest in a wave of discounts and price cuts for electric cars in Australia, as competition heats up.

Up to about $10,000 was recently slashed from the MG 4 and ZS EV, the GWM Ora's RRP was reduced to make it the cheapest new electric car on sale, and Tesla rolled out two price cuts in three weeks last month.

BYD is one of the few electric-car brands at the cheaper end of the market that has not cut prices, but it is currently offering 2023-plate demonstrator Atto 3 SUVs for $45,990 to $47,990 drive-away – a reduction of about $5700 to $7900, depending on the state.
