Cupra: Seven new models by 2021 – report
Seat's performance spin-off to launch special-edition Atecas and more.
Cupra, the newly spun-off performance division of Spanish manufacturer Seat, is planning an extensive model rollout in the coming years – according to a new report.
Spanish publication Periodismodel Motor claims the go-fast sub-brand intends to launch an additional seven models before 2021, joining the current Cupra Ateca SUV.
However, don't expect every offering in the Seat line-up to get a Cupra version. According to the report, Antonio Labate, director for development, strategy, brand and operations at Cupra, said the seven new models will include special-edition versions of the Ateca.
We're expecting one of the other Seat models to get the Cupra treatment is the Leon hatchback, which has been rather successful in Europe as a front-wheel drive hot hatch and all-wheel drive hot wagon.
Other possibilities are the smaller Arona SUV, while a bespoke Cupra-only crossover is said to be on the cards.
Power in the Cupra Ateca – which is heavily based on the Volkswagen Tiguan – comes from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the Volkswagen Golf R, developing a healthy 221kW of power and 400Nm of torque.
Fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic driving all four wheels, the Cupra Ateca can hit 100km/h from a standstill in 5.4 seconds, and will keep on pulling to 245km/h.
The Volkswagen Group's local division has ruled out the introduction of Seat and Cupra products for the time being, so hopefully a Tiguan R is in the works with the hot Ateca's running gear.
