The Volvo XC90 is fast becoming a bit of an oldie in the large luxury SUV segment, but we think it's still a goodie.

2018 Volvo XC90 D5 Inscription review
Owner Review | 28 Jan 2019
After what seems like an eternity we’ve got our new car. Two years ago I started the search for a replacement of our venerable 2007 XC90. The choices that were afforded to us just never lived up to what Lars could and had provided for us. Yes the kids called the old Volvo Lars. Things like the Everest, Prado, Patrol, Discovery had been sampled. All coming up short as a replacement in more than one area. We needed a new car as a work commuter, school bus, sports bus and most importantly a tow vehicle for a Horse Float. Björn arrived about a month ago and is proving very popular. He’s been loaded up with seven people on many occasions. Going to the beach, Big Bash League matches and to friends houses. Everyone loves the magic carpet ride of the air suspension. So much so I am not getting access to the car as my wife, who doesn’t like driving big cars, has started taking Björn Ulvaeus to work everyday. Set it to dynamic mode however and Björn becomes a different beast, more like Björn Ironside. Ok maybe not but you get my drift. Throttle response is instantaneous, ride is firmer but not harsh with minimal body roll. Steering is slightly heavier but responsive to the touch. I haven’t bothered with setting up individual mode yet as I can’t see the need....... yet. The 360 degree camera is brilliant and clear. Making parking a breeze and so far so good there are no scuffs on the 21 inch wheels because of it. The versatility and comfort of the cabin is second to none in the price range. No need for powered seats that might break, Volvo use good old levers, hinges and people power. Our car being a demo is packed with a few extras. Ponoramic roof, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel and the most important feature, the Bowers and Wilkins stereo system. Words and YouTube will never be able to convey the clarity and power of this system. If you’re in the market for an XC90 and like music, do yourself a favour and tick the box. Whilst I’m on the subject, the infotainment system sensus is fast and intuitive to use. My kids who are 12 and 7 are all over it. Safety is obviously top notch in the XC90. Not much to say about safety really except it’s not intrusive and works as advertised. Brilliantly. The “since 1959” stamped into the seat belt buckle is a nice touch. Pilot Assist II on our car works great but I’m not sure I’ll be using it a lot as I actually like driving. Also we haven’t yet been driving in heavy traffic or on a long distance drive, so you never know. The diesel although only 2 litres is more than enough for our needs. And here is the only downside to the whole car. Fuel economy isn’t mind blowing. It’s still way better than Lars who had a 2.4 litre 5 cylinder diesel, but not light years ahead. I guess the weight and around town driving is the issue, plus a bit of “testing the acceleration” for family and friends isn’t helping. Saying that, it’s very quiet and the 8 speed gear box is seamless. Overall we are extremely happy with Björn which ever one he is.
2016 Volvo XC90 T8 R-Design Hybrid review
Owner Review | 7 Mar 2017
Let me start by getting my bias out on the table. I love Volvo's, I grew up on Sydney's North Shore where Volvo's are the family car of choice, I also learnt to drive in a 2002 Volvo V70XC and have since owned three Volvo's before this one. This Volvo however, is different. Very different. Its the first of the new direction for Volvo as a genuine rival to the German luxury brands. Our XC90 is the T8 R-Design variant with the Polestar performance upgrade. This makes it the most powerful Volvo ever built (421 hp and 680 Nm) with a 5.5 second 0-100km/h - not bad for a seven seat, three tonne SUV. It also claims to achieve this with a 2.1l/100km but that's not reality; I will get to this later. The XC90 offers some incredible features such as IntelliSafe with Pilot Assist II (Similar to Tesla's Auto Pilot this allows you to set the system on the freeway to drive, steer and brake for you - only catch is you hand is to remain on the wheel. You know, Volvo being safe and all.), a full iPad style touch screen control, a crystal gear lever (yes, legitimately the T8 comes with an Orrefors Crystal Gear Stick), Tri-Zone Climate, massive sunroof and all the other usual bells and whistles of a $100,000 plus SUV. There are a few things that should be standard on a car of this caliber such as Premium Sound System (Bowers & Wilkins, Air Suspension (this option is a must if you elect to have the 22" Rims), Ventilated Seats (the R-Design only has heated seats), Apple Car Play, Pilot Assist II, and the list goes on and on. Chuck on some big wheels, air suspension, Polestar Performance and a few other goodies and you've spent over $150,000. In saying that, its worth it. We have owned this car nearly six months now and absolutely love it. Its got power when you need it, you can drive around town in "Pure" (EV) mode but you could also drive to Perth if you needed to thanks to the second Turbo & Supercharged Petrol Engine. For a bucket load of fun you can put it into "Performance" mode and the suspension will drop, both engines will kick in (Electric Rear and Petrol Front) and the dash will change to RPM instead of electric power. This mode makes the XC90 unexpectedly fun to drive, you would be forgiven for thinking you were driving of a a rear wheel drive sports sedan rather than a seven seat Volvo SUV. Now I should talk about its economy. Think you're going to achieve 2.1L per 100km? Dare to dream. In reality on the open road in "Hybrid" mode I achieve about 6-7/100km of Premium (it only takes 98 RON) after the electric charge has run out. In saying this, I live in the country so I only usually do open road driving which is not what PHEV's are designed for. However 90% of my driving is conducted in Pure mode around town where I achieve about 35km of EV driving - Enough for most peoples daily commute. I can drive to Orange (about 100km away) on about 4 liters if I charge the car before I go. If you are considering an XC90 T8 you also need to factor in the cost of a JetCharge Home Station (about $2500 installed). This will charge the car in two hours as opposed to Volvo's eight hours for the cord that comes with the car. This makes living with the car a breeze. Now comes the time to mention the cons, besides the price tag. It has a few, within a minutes or so of start-up there can be a bit of a lag with the computer screen that controls everything but this passes in 30-60 seconds. There is no spare wheel, it comes with a repair kit which probably not an issue for the Sydney-siders but when I live six hours West this could be an issue if your'e in the bush (not what this car was designed for). The 35km EV only range is pretty pathetic but if you want true EV and not a PHEV keep saving for a Tesla. All in all we are very happy with our XC90 T8. It's fast when you need it, it's an EV when you need it, it's as comfortable as a Range Rover and it can haul the family wherever you want to go. If you're in the market for a Luxury SUV that does't scream "New Money" like a Range Rover, I would suggest that you put this Scandinavian beauty at the top of your shopping list.
2016 Volvo Xc90 D5 2.0 Inscription Review
Owner Review | 4 May 2016
Two months and it has been an amazing car so far. Unbelievably quiet and performs very well around town and on the highway. Plenty of grip and we have just come back from 400km in the country, much of gravel roads which it stuck to like glue. The systems are easy to work and access though you need to remember to keep your eyes on the road and not get to wrapped up in them. I look forward to a hybrid version. The touch screen is fantastic and you find your way around very easily, and the sat nav works well and can be moved between screens, very handy. Hands free connectivity works well also and very easy to use. This is by far the best car I have ever owned, I hope i continue to feel this way after 3 years of ownership, so good so far... A great car for a family with easy access to the seven seats which are very comfortable and there is plenty of space for all the crew. We already done some long distance travel which is done in complete comfort and silence, except for the kids... Vision is good and access to the back is easy, and it holds a lot of gear. The accessories seem to be of very high quality and you pay accordingly, but you pay for what you get. We looked at other brands but kept coming back to the XC90 and my wife is very happy with it.

2015 Volvo Xc90 T6 2.0 Inscription Review
Owner Review | 31 Jan 2016
The step up from the old XC90 is certainly appreciated. This car has brought the model up into the X5 & Q7 stables. It gives classy appearance and displays quality interior with so much information as to the vehicle operation on the big screen. It has been a real culture change to accept that you don't need the big V8 or V6 with the reassuring growl to get up and go. The acceleration power, which comes without a lot of noise and fuss, is quite exhilarating and satisfying considering the size of the engine. If you are still held in the old mold of noise equals power, you will never be able to fit into the XC90 or the electric cars of the future. The 8 speed gearbox is constantly keeping the motor revs trimmed in the area of 1200 to 1600 RPM and makes use of the torque where possible. Gear shifts are hardly distinguishable and sometimes slow in deciding whether to go up or down a gear which was more pronounced in the older model. The Nappa leather seating and interior linings are top quality and comfortable. The driving position is excellent and Steering is effortless with a sense of control and feel of the road, tracking well. Braking is excellent, experienced when a car pulled out of drive in front of me. The safety features came into action with the ABS and seat belts tightening up and pulling you back. With the sudden braking, I was advised by a driver following that the rear brake lights started flashing brightly which has obviously been designed to give clear warning to anyone behind. Lane assist and adaptive cruise control are great options, but when you change lanes you need to concentrate as car may speed up or pull up suddenly depending where the vehicle is in the new lane. heads up display is good but not easily seen when wearing polarized sunglasses. Auto headlight dipping and windscreen wipers work well and adjustable.
