Mercedes-Benz X-Class to be axed in May

The dual-cab Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute will be axed globally in May, less than three years after its global reveal and barely two years after its introduction to the Australian market. "It has been decided that from the end of May 2020, we will no longer produce this relatively young model," Mercedes-Benz said in a statement. "In our global product portfolio, the X-Class is a niche product which plays a great role in a few markets, including Australia and South Africa."

A report out of Europe, published overnight by respected industry journal Automotive News, cited unnamed but well-informed sources claiming the Mercedes X-Class ute “is to be dropped” as the company “seeks to reduce costs amid profit warnings”.

Mercedes-Benz X-Class could gain AMG styling pack, but won’t get a V8

The all-new Mercedes-Benz X-Class may have set chins wagging with its not-like-the-concept styling, but the German company could soon introduce a more heavily stylised version of the dual-cab ute. The head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volker Mornhinweg, told Australian media at the launch of the new X-Class ute there is no definite decision on whether there’ll be any involvement from the company’s performance side-arm, Mercedes-AMG.
