Mazda continues investment into rotary engines for ‘special characteristic’

Bringing back the iconic rotary engine is still a work in progress at Mazda, as the Japanese giant works to find the best way to use the unique internal combustion configuration while most manufacturers publicly focus their efforts on electric mobility. Mazda remains an outlier in the automotive industry, trying to inject a sense of reality into the electric vehicle (EV) frenzy.

Mazda not working on sports car larger than the MX-5

Masamichi Kogai, CEO of Mazda, has stated that his company isn't currently working a sports car larger than the MX-5. During an interview with Automotive News, Kogai was asked if the company had plans for a "larger sports car entry", to which he simply stated no. This seemingly rules out a new rotary-powered sports car in the near future and contradicts an August report in Japan's Holiday Auto, which claimed that the company was prepping an RX-7 successor for 2020.

Mazda RX rotary sportscar has a “definite” business case for Australia

Mazda Australia says it can definitely make a business case for the next-generation RX vehicle, with the brand's local boss admitting a rotary-powered sports car is as much about making a brand statement as making money. “Definitely,” Mazda Australia CEO Martin Benders told CarAdvice at this week’s Tokyo motor show when asked if there was a business case for a new RX car.
