Mazda rotary sports car ‘still a dream’, no work started

The much talked about, on again, off again, Mazda rotary sports car appears to still be in the very early stages of development, putting doubt on previous assertions that the vehicle would be ready for a 2020 release. Speaking with media at the Los Angeles motor show today, the Japanese company’s boss of Powertrain developments, Ichiro Hirose, admitted that while a new RX-8 (or RX-9) is his personal dream, it remains just that for the time-being.

Mazda's rotary engine to make its return in Toyota's autonomous vehicle

Masahiro Moro, head of Mazda North America, has revealed the company's rotary engine will be used in Toyota's future autonomous vehicles. In an interview with Bloomberg, Moro said Mazda's rotary engine technology would be used as a generator to charge the battery and extend the operating range of Toyota's self-driving electric cars. This layout has been patented by Mazda and was last seen in the 2013 Mazda 2 RE prototype.

Mazda working on next-generation rotary engine

Mazda has admitted that it has an engineering division currently working on a next-generation rotary engine, but there's no definitive date for its release. Speaking to media at the 2017 Los Angeles motor show, president and CEO of Mazda North America operations, Masahiro Moro, said the rotary fan base is huge, so a rotary is within Mazda's future.

Mazda working on 'fundamental and structure issues of rotary engine', no electrified RX model

Mazda has confirmed that work is continuing on the resurrection of a rotary-powered sports car, which will not be hybridised, however the fundamental issues of that type of engine remain a challenge. Having introduced the Mazda RX Vision at the Tokyo motor show last year, the company has made it one of its internal missions to bring back a rotary sports car of some sort.

Mazda SkyACTIV-R rotary engine: for RX sports car only; no platform sharing with MX-5

According to Mazda the development of it new SkyACTIV-R rotary engine will be strictly used for its top of the range RX sports car, which itself will use an entirely new platform instead of sharing that of the newly released MX-5. Speaking to CarAdvice at the Tokyo Motor Show today, Mazda’s global boss of R&D, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, confirmed the rotary engine is primarily for its range-topping sports car, however other applications are still possible.
