Porsche 99X revealed: Formula E racer takes shape

Porsche has revealed its latest racer, the car that forced it to drop its highly-successful LMP1 World Endurance Championship program. And it's electric. The 99X Electric will make its competitive debut in the 2019/20 Formula E Championship, but will first officially hit the track at the Spanish pre-season test in October. As with the wider Formula E grid, the 99X will output 250kW from its electric motor and have a 52kWh battery pack.

The case for Formula E in Australia

Formula E has already hit some of the world's biggest, most exciting cities. London, Paris, Shanghai and New York have all hosted races, but there's no Australian event on the calendar. Yet. That would change if Allan McNish, three-time Le Mans winner and Audi's Formula E team principal, gets his way. Apparently "there's been discussions" about a race Down Under, but nothing has happened yet.

Following its reveal at the Shanghai motor show last month, the company's first EV was put through its paces on the famous Monte Carlo circuit by three-time Le Mans 24 Hour winner, Darren Turner.

Video: Watch a Formula E car take on a cheetah

Formula E has lined John-Eric Vergne up alongside a cheetah, as part of a unique promotional stunt. Designed to highlight the burgeoning race series' eco-credentials, the video draws attention to the fact cheetahs are at threat of extinction. According to National Geographic, the already-low population is at risk of declining by a further 53 per cent over the next 14 years.
