Every car leaving the Australian market in 2020

It was a big year for automotive in 2020, with the exit of Holden, the cancellation of international motor shows and the Australian Grand Prix due to coronavirus, and the steady decline of new car sales. In a challenging climate, it's perhaps unsurprising that carmakers reduced their ranges, discontinued under-performers and replaced older models with hybrids, electric cars or new creations altogether.

Ford Mondeo axed from mid-2020

Ford will only offer the Mondeo in base Ambiente trim from the start of 2020, before the mid-sized hatch and wagon are removed from the line-up in the second half of the year. The move reflects "changing customer preferences including an overall shift towards SUVs", said Ford Australia communications boss Matt Moran.

2019 Ford Mondeo facelift unveiled

The facelifted Ford Mondeo have been unveiled at the 2019 Brussels motor show in Belgium. Subtle is probably the best way of describing this update. Up front all models gain a new front bumper, which visually joins together the lower air intake and fog light pods for a slightly sportier design. Depending on the trim and model there's also new grille inserts and alloy wheel designs to marvel at.

Ford Mondeo on the chopping block - report

The mid-sized Ford Mondeo could soon be no more, with reports out of the UK claiming the Blue Oval could drop its long-running nameplate as it tries to cut costs. A new article by The Telegraph says Ford is facing "mounting speculation" that it's planning to scrap the Mondeo range and cut up to 24,000 jobs. Other model lines said to be in the firing line include the Galaxy and S-Max people movers, due to consumers shifting towards SUVs.

Ford recalls 550,000 Escapes and Fusions in North America, Oz models not affected

Ford has issued a recall for approximately 550,000 Escapes and Fusions in North America this week, over concerns about automatic transmissions that may not shift into the selected gear. The Blue Oval reports the bushing connecting the shifter cable to the transmission may detach, allowing the transmission to be in a "gear state different than the gear shift position selected by the driver".
