2008 Ford Focus XR5 Turbo Review

I thought I'd write a review on this car seeing as I've just sold it after 3 years of trouble free ownership.

I purchased it 3 years ago and it was the best car I've ever owned. Beautiful to drive in all conditions (despite the lack of cruise), 100% reliable and cheap to run considering it's a European hot hatch.

The best thing about this car was the engine, it's brilliant. Supremely torquey, good on fuel (under 10L/100km in the city) all accompanied by a fantastic note. The shift action is perfectly weighted to the clutch on these, so changing gears even in traffic was never a chore.

Another welcome surprise with this car was how cheap it was to run. Yes it needs premium fuel, but apart from scheduled servicing I never needed to touch anything. It was still on the original rotors at over 100,000km!

My car, which was the facelifted LV model, included Bluetooth with voice control of good quality, push button start, AUX input, as well as minor interior and exterior tweaks. The optional heated leather seats are worth their weight in gold over the standard cloth.

Criticisms? Well, the lack of cruise simply is not good enough. The bonnet lock (which you have to open with a key) is ridiculous and the centre fascia area of the interior was never a major strongpoint with the Focus of this era. It's also worth mentioning that if you have a car with leather, you lose the rear middle seat.

If you can forgive those minor quirks though, you end up with a brilliant hot hatch that you can use every day. These can be picked up for bargain prices these days and it will put a bigger smile on your face than any Golf GTI can!
