New BMW M4 Convertible Edition 30 Years revealed

Small batch of birthday drop-tops likely for Australia.

BMW is celebrating 30 years since the first M3 convertible with a limited edition drop-top.

Paying homage to the original M3 E30 convertible, the German carmaker is offering a limited run of the 30 Year Edition M4 Convertible (the M4 designation is now given to the 3-Series based coupe and convertible performance variants, while only sedan variants wear the M3 badge).

Available exclusively in two exterior colours, Macao blue and Mandarin II uni yellow, the former is borrowed from the palate of the first M3 E30 while Mandarin II is a tribute to the second-generation M3's bright Dakar yellow paint.

Both receive matching interior trims with either Fjord blue or Silverstone grey ascents on Marino leather seats and additional yellow contrasting stitching is an option. Other exclusive finishes inside for the 30 Years pair include carbon fibre trim inserts, M floor mats and untranslated 30 Jahr Edition headrests and sills. A passenger-side plaque is etched with 30 Jahr Edition and numbered 1/300, representing the limited run of vehicles available worldwide.

Outside, the vehicles are dressed with black ascents and surrounds on the iconic BMW kidney grille, M side vents and badges. The special drop-top also rides on exclusive 20-inch matt grey forged alloy wheels.

The birthday car is based on the M4 with M Competition Package that gets an M sport exhaust and adaptive M suspension along with a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 331kW of power and 550Nm of torque – a sizeable upgrade from the original 2.3-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine which produced half as much power.

BMW Australia has not confirmed how many of the M4 Convertible 30 Years Editions it will receive but it took 30 of the 500 2016 M3 limited edition sedans last year.

“We have put our hand up. As well as the performance mindset, our customers love accessing limited production variants. We will confirm allocation soon,” said BMW Australia PR communications manager, Adam Davis.
