Mercedes-AMG GT R to debut at 2016 Goodwood Festival
This year's Goodwood Festival of Speed in June will mark the debut of a more harder-edged version of the new Mercedes-AMG GT, Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers told CarAdvice at this week's Geneva motor show.
“The next performance level of the GT will be called GT R," Moers said, and it is likely the wider and winged variant of the AMG GT recently spied testing. Will it be worth the wait?
“You can expect a car that is better than a (Mercedes-Benz) SLS Black Series on a racetrack” said Moers.
The R version may not be the peak of the AMG GT coupe’s development, however. “We set new limits for ourselves as well as everybody else”, said Moers, “we want to push a GT Black Series higher.”
Regarding the naming similarity with the Nissan GT-R, Moers noted “we didn’t ask those guys, because you know, it's always complicated.”
“It’s a different understanding. It’s a different way we write it”, said Moers, “for us, the R is an added letter to GT. The GT-R for Nissan stands for itself.”
Moers was tight lipped on power improvements but hinted that the GT R may feature such technical advances as active aerodynamics and four-wheel steering.
The model will not be a limited edition and is expected to launch in Australia in 2017.
