2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid due in Australia next year

The first hybrid – and first all-wheel-drive – Chevrolet Corvette in the nameplate's 70-year history is due in Australia this time next year.

The 2024 Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid supercar – which combines V8 power with an electric motor – is expected in Australian showrooms by the end of next year.

General Motors Specialty Vehicles (GMSV) announced today Australia-bound production of the Corvette E-Ray is "expected to commence mid-next year."

Given the shipping time from the US to Australia, it is expected the first cars will be in local showrooms by the end of 2024.

Prices are yet to be announced, however it is estimated to start from about $250,000, using the prices of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Z06 in Australia and the US as a guide.

The E-Ray is the third model in the mid-engined 'C8' Corvette range, and combines the standard Stingray's 6.2-litre V8 engine powering the rear wheels with an electric motor driving the front wheels.

The system produces 481kW combined, and thanks to all-wheel drive – a first in a Corvette – makes the E-Ray the quickest-accelerating Corvette ever, with a claimed 0-60mph (97km/h) time of 2.5 seconds.

The Corvette E-Ray's hybrid system is closer to a Toyota RAV4 than a McLaren Artura or Ferrari 296 GTB in design, as it cannot be plugged in – and the battery can only be recharged using the engine, or energy captured under braking.

The battery capacity is 1.9kWh – about double what is offered by a Toyota RAV4 hybrid – and allows for a few kilometres of electric-only driving in a 'Stealth Mode' before the petrol engine switches on.
