2024 Subaru WRX price and specs: Club Spec returns, manuals plug key safety gap

The omission of key advanced safety technology from manual Subaru WRX sedans has been addressed two years after launch, as the STI spoiler returns to the range on a new Club Spec edition.

The 2024 Subaru WRX has gained a new Club Spec limited edition – and key safety technology previously omitted from manual variants – alongside a price rise for most models.

After specifications were announced earlier this month, it has been confirmed by Subaru the WRX Club Spec will be priced from $52,590 plus on-road costs, $5100 more than the entry-level variant on which it is based, and just $400 cheaper than the better-equipped RS.

Alongside the new special edition, crucial advanced safety features – including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) – will be added to manual transmission variants after they were previously exclusive to CVT auto models.

Subaru has slipped in 12 months ahead of the government's March 2025 date for the mandatory fitment of AEB – capable of preventing rear-end collisions – to all new passenger vehicles brought to Australia.

Added to manual models for a $1500 price rise – with the WRX range now priced from $47,490 plus on-road costs – is AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, lane centring assist and speed sign recognition.

The safety upgrades apply to the Club Spec, which is available solely as a sedan with a six-speed manual transmission.

Compared to the base WRX, it gains a WRX STI-style spoiler, 19-inch alloy wheels, Bridgestone Potenza S007 tyres, larger brake discs with upgraded Brembo brake calipers, retuned suspension and steering, Club Spec badges, and Recaro front sports seats.

There is no more power from the 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which retains 202kW and 350Nm. Plans for a new WRX STI were scrapped two years ago.

The Club Spec name was last used in 2020, and has been applied to several Australian-market WRX editions since the mid-1990s.

It is believed to be one of a number of celebrations planned for the WRX's 30th anniversary in Australia this year. A version of the Club Spec without the spoiler is sold in the US as a permanent member of the range, with the TR badge.

Other updates for Model Year 2024 WRX variants include the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the range – which were previously wired-only.

A 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is now standard on the entry-level Sportswagon. It was previously exclusive to the GT and tS wagons – as well as the RS and tS sedans.

WRX Sportswagon.

All WRX Sportswagon variants have increased in price by $800, even though the stereo upgrade only applies to the base model – while automatic sedans are unchanged in price.

Crystal White Pearl has been replaced by Ceramic White on WRX Sportswagon variants, while wagons also gain a new Asteroid Grey Pearl colour.

In the US, the 2024 WRX range has quietly swapped to an indicator stalk which remains in place when it is activated – rather than springing back to centre.

The 2024 Subaru WRX range is available to order now in Australia.
