Around the Tracks: Acura reveals a very impressive looking hood

Plus, motorcycle racing legend Valentino Rossi could make the switch to four-wheels.

When we’re not creating it ourselves, the CarAdvice team spends a lot of time finding and consuming motoring content from all over the world.

Here’s a handful of the photos, articles, videos or social media posts that most caught our eye last week. Some of them are brand new, others have been online for a while.

Enjoy them – just not too much, okay?

Acura Integra repurposes electric sunroof as power engine cover

It's a very nifty way to reveal an engine. A video was posted to TikTok uncovering this cool new look hood of an Acura Integra. The sunroof appears to be the type of third-party panel that someone can install after purchase, rather than from the factory.

Like any sunroof, the panel has the ability to slide and, when open, the hole is in the perfect location to uncover the transverse-mounted Acura four-cylinder engine. While the setup doesn't seem to offer any performance improvements, it looks super impressive.

Chevy has also mastered the installation of a panel in the hood to view its engine on a Corvette in the past.

Valentino Rossi's racing career may not be completely over with a switch to four-wheels in his sights

It's been 26 seasons of witnessing one of the legends of motorbike racing, but at the age of 42 Valentino Rossi is hanging up his boots. Rossi will still be in the paddock with his new race team, but even more interestingly he'll also reportedly be making a long-awaited switch to cars.

Rossi started out racing go-karts, and after several Formula One tests, had once even been rumoured to make the change to four-wheels. In a press conference he spoke of his desire to compete in the Le Mans 24 hour, and while it's not confirmed as yet, he made mention that he'll want to be competitive and the experience won't just be for fun.

If you're afraid of heights then this Ford challenge isn't for you

As part of its "explorers are never done" campaign, Ford hired a crane and had a new Ford Explorer Plug-In Hybrid placed at the top of the 154-foot tower in Lillesand, Norway – the tallest free-standing climbing tower in the world.

Fourteen pro climbers were then invited to attempt to scale the tower, reach the SUV, and set a time. Only the top six fastest finishers went through to the final round.

The winner was a 21-year-old male who raced to the way to the top in just 3 minutes and 33 seconds. The reward? A two-year lease on an Explorer PHEV along with a 3D-printed tower replica as a trophy. Surely an expensive exercise but a pretty cool way to promote a car.

Costco members can also get a pretty good deal on an Audi

Costo are known for having pretty much everything and now they are offering member-only incentives to anyone who wants to purchase or lease a brand-new Audi.

The "Audi Limited-Time Special" is available now through to September 30, 2021. The models with a $1000 discount include the Q5, Q5 PHEV, Q5 Sportback, Q7, e-tron, e-tron Sportback, SQ5, SQ5 Sportback, and SQ7. There are also savings on offer for models such as the flagship A8, A8 PHEV, and S8 with a discount of $2,500.

There may not be as many deals made as the company would like with Costco alerting customers of the current limited vehicle inventory.

Mazda MX-5 conquers off-road trail with just a set of all-terrain tyres

This Mazda MX-5 RF has truly impressed – able to conquer Colorado’s Imogene Pass, a legitimate off-road trail. This MX-5 rides on stock suspension with the only off-roading upgrades it features being the Sparco wheels and 27-inch Falken all-terrain tyres. Its only other modifications are a side skirt and fender liner delete to accommodate them.

The light body mod was made by removing the side skirts, cutting away the fender liner. Then with some extra love from a hammer they were able to make a clearance of some metal on the chassis side of the wheel wells.

By the look of it, it did a fair stint. The driver did a lot of pre planning of the trail to investigate things like river crossings to make sure they’re not too deep.
