2022 Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport spotted testing in Victoria

Toyota's long-awaited LandCruiser 300 Series has hit Australian roads, with this GR Sport variant appearing on Instagram.

The all-new 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series has been caught on camera testing on Australian roads in what appears to be GR Sport trim.

Images and videos posted on Instagram by @land.cruiser.300 and @benjamin.foon show a matte black LandCruiser 300 Series driving through Ringwood in Melbourne's east, covered in a layer of dust likely originating from unsealed-road testing by Toyota Australia engineers in rural Victoria.

The example spotted appears to be the GR Sport variant – differentiated by its unique alloy wheels, rear bumper and tailgate badging (which has been taped over on this pre-production prototype).

While the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series range is due in Australia late this year, the Japanese car maker is yet to confirm if the GR Sport will be sold locally – or if the vehicle caught on camera is being tested on behalf of overseas markets.

The GR Sport example is fitted with a hooped bullbar – though the lack of front-on images or video makes it difficult to ascertain any other key changes.

Revealed in June, the new 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series represents the first all-new LandCruiser in 14 years, and brings with it a completely new core structure, an evolutionary exterior, overhauled interior, upgraded technology, and an all-new twin-turbo diesel V6 engine.

A registration of interest page on Toyota Australia's website confirms all models in Australia will initially be powered by the new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6, which sends 227kW and 700Nm to all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Full-time four-wheel drive and a 3500kg braked towing capacity will be standard across the range, while top-end models including the Sahara will offer seven seats, off-road cruise control modes, and a 'Multi-Terrain Monitor' off-road 360-degree camera system.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice and Drive for all the latest Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series news, including pricing, as the four-wheel drive's local launch approaches.
