2022 BMW 2 Series side profile spied undisguised with box arches, sharp lines

BMW's smallest coupe has leaked again, this time showcasing its side profile free of camouflage.

The upcoming 2022 BMW 2 Series' side profile has been spotted undisguised, ahead of its full debut in the coming months.

A pair of images posted on the DeCoches blog present the 'G42' 2 Series side-on, revealing it will feature box-style front and rear wheel arches, a sharp body crease, a traditional Hofmeister window kink (unlike the larger 4 Series coupe), and flush door handles similar to those of the i4, iX and other upcoming BMW models.

The 19-inch alloy wheels, large performance brakes and black side skirts (similar to those fitted to the new M3 and M4) suggest we're looking at a sporty 'M Performance' model – expected to be badged M240i or M245i, depending on engine output – backed up by a covered-up M badge affixed to the front quarter-panel.

The side profile shots complete the puzzle of 2 Series leaked images started in April 2020, after undisguised front and rear views of the upcoming sports coupe leaked out of a BMW design facility – images which have since been validated by spy shots of prototypes testing in Europe and the US.

Slated to enter production in August 2021 according to BMW insiders, the new 2 Series coupe will retain its predecessor's rear-wheel drive configuration and longitudinally-mounted engine layout, with an array of turbocharged four- and six-cylinder engines set to be offered, developing around or over 260kW in flagship M240i/M245i guise.

A flagship M2 model will follow in late 2022, expected to develop over 313kW from a detuned version of the M3/M4's 3.0-litre twin-turbo six, according to recent reports.

The 2022 BMW 2 Series will likely make its full debut within the next two to three months, with whispers out of Europe suggesting an unveiling on 14 July 2021. An Australian launch is likely to occur in early 2022.
