The 2021 Toyota C-HR GR Sport has landed, providing our first look at the company's performance-oriented sub-brand.

Only available as a hybrid, Toyota has positioned the new C-HR variant as a sportier alternative for buyers, with the new model sitting alongside the range-topping C-HR Koba.

A number of updates were made to the C-HR line-up in August 2020, with new safety tech accompanying a price rise.

Toyota's new 'GR Sport' range shouldn't be confused with the full-blooded 'GR' badge found on the Supra and GR Yaris. Instead, GR Sport models offer styling changes and slightly re-tuned suspension set-ups.

In this case, the Toyota C-HR GR Sport has been lowered by 15mm with firmer springs, but retains the MacPherson front struts and double-wishbone rear suspension found across the C-HR line-up.

A more aggressive body-kit and 19-inch alloy wheels are standard on the GR Sport, as is a unique grille and automatic LED headlights.

The sporty theme continues inside the cabin, with black leather and suede upholstery with white accented trim, aluminium pedals, and GR badges on the front seats.

As with the C-HR Koba, the GR Sport gets an 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, Bluetooth, and satellite navigation with live traffic updates.

Keyless entry and start, dual-zone climate control, power-folding side mirrors with heating, automatic wipers, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror come as standard, while a 4.2-inch multifunction display sits ahead of the driver.

The C-HR GR Sport gets autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist recognition (under certain circumstances), adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reversing camera, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, hill-start assist, and parking sensors front and rear.

Like the C-HR Koba, the GR Sport is powered by a 1.8-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder engine, accompanied by two electric motors to produce a total of 90kW of power and 142Nm of torque.

Drive is sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic transmission. In the C-HR Koba Hybrid, with the same powertrain, Toyota claims fuel consumption figures of 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres, though this figure may vary slightly with the larger wheels and aero changes on the GR Sport.

There are eight different paint options available for the C-HR GR Sport, but those who option Crystal Pearl, Feverish Red, and Hornet Yellow will all receive a black roof.

The 2021 Toyota C-HR GR Sport comes with a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, and is available to order now.
