2021 Ferrari SF90 Spider revealed
Ferrari has revealed an open-top version of its fastest and most powerful road car ever – the SF90 Spider.
It comes 18 months after the debut of the hardtop Ferrari SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid, on which it is based.
Ferrari’s goal was simple – maintain the incredible amounts of performance with the SF90 Spider’s Retractable Hard Top (RHT) in use, and not interfere with aerodynamics and cooling with it retracted.
Ferrari claims it opted for an RHT design over a regular canvas roof as to prevent deformity at speed, and improve packaging efforts. Its fold-away action takes 14 seconds to complete, and it requires just 100L of storage space.
Aerodynamic efficiency has been carefully managed as part of the SF90 Spider’s transformation. Long louvres have been added to its rear window, which replace the rear ducts as found on the SF90 Stradale.
The SF90 Spider continues to use the same "shut-off Gurney" suspended rear spoiler design as found on the hardtop version.
As for cooling, Ferrari has gone as far as completely redesigning the brake system's cooling circuit.
Spider-unique brake callipers feature an integrated aero-fin, which more effectively distributes charged air to cool its brakes.
Hot air which is used to wash-off its front radiators has now been directed differently, in order to allow fresh air to flow through its rear-mounted intercoolers instead.
Driveline details are the same as the hard-top version. The SF90 Spider continues to use a 574kW/800Nm 3.9-litre turbocharged V8 engine, which is further augmented by a triplet of electric motors that generate another 162kW.
Total system output comes in at 745kW, or 1000hp neat.
Performance figures remain eerily dizzying – 0-100km/h in 2.5sec, 0-200 km/h in 7.0sec, and a Fiorano lap time of 1:19.5 – just half a second off the hardtop equivalent.
On the inside, the SF90 Spider introduces a new central aerodynamic element between the driver and passenger, which prevents in-cabin air turbulence with the roof down. The solution is drag neutral, in case you were concerned.
Ferrari has an excellent track-record of offering its open-top vehicles in Australia, so expect the SF90 Spider to arrive in Australia.
Pricing is yet to be revealed.
