The smaller sibling to the Ford Ranger ute in the US looks set to reprise an old name.

The Ford Ranger pick-up's smaller ute sibling in the US is expected to be called Maverick – the name of a Ford compact car sold in the US in the 1970s, and the badge given to the Ford version of the Nissan Patrol Y60 sold in Australia between 1988 and 1994.

YouTube channel The Fast Lane Truck claims the above image of a tailgate reveals the Maverick name, with space for Ford's famous blue oval badge.

Ford Australia has not commented on the legitimacy of the report, or if the smaller ute offering will join local showrooms.

The Ford Maverick ute – which had been speculated to be named Courier or Ranchero – is expected to share the same underpinnings as the Ford Focus small car and Ford Escape SUV.

The same platform, code-named "C2" reportedly also forms the basis of the recently-leaked Ford Bronco Sport.

The Ford Maverick badge was last seen in Australia on a rebadged Nissan Patrol Y60 that Ford sold between 1988 and 1994, but was also used on a Maverick compact car sold in the Americas from 1969 to 1979.
