Full Australian pricing and specifications for the upcoming 2020 Skoda Scala small car has been announced, following its global unveiling in December 2018.

Although its original 2019 launch date had been pushed out by production delays, a June debut is now confirmed, with the long-awaited Scala set to slot into the small car class alongside its group stablemate the Volkswagen Golf – but with the promise of more space and more equipment for the same spend.

Three variants will be offered at launch Down Under – 110TSI, Monte Carlo and Launch Edition – all powered by the same 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (dry clutch).

The range kicks off with the 110TSI, priced from $26,990 drive-away with a manual or $28,990 drive-away with the optional DSG auto.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch silver ‘Vega’ alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, 10.25-inch ‘Virtual Cockpit’ digital instrument cluster, LED tail-lights with sweeping LED indicators, a reversing camera, electric tailgate, tyre pressure monitoring, privacy glass and power-folding exterior mirrors.

There’s also a leather-wrapped steering wheel, red ambient interior lighting, manually-adjustable seats, voice control, front fog lights, a full-sized spare wheel, rear centre armrest, two rear USB ports and an assortment of extras including front and rear floor mats and a 12-volt socket in the boot.

Despite being the entry-level model, 110TSI buyers score a generous list of safety technologies as standard, including seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, rear parking sensors, driver fatigue monitoring and hill hold assist.

Sitting above the 110TSI is the DSG-only Monte Carlo, priced from $33,990 drive-away.

Like the Fabia Monte Carlo with which it shares its badge, the Scala Monte Carlo is pitched as the sporty offering in the range, featuring blacked-out exterior elements on the grille, roof, rear spoiler and mirror caps, alongside black badging and unique 18-inch ‘Vega Black’ alloy wheels. Inside, red-accented sports seats and metallic sports pedals replace the existing units.

Other equipment additions over the 110TSI include a panoramic sunroof, adaptive LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, push-button start and 15mm lower ‘Sport Chassis Control’, suspension which offers the driver a choice between Normal and Sport drive modes.

Sitting atop the launch line-up is the aptly-named Launch Edition, priced from $35,990 drive-away with the DSG transmission.

It swaps out the Monte Carlo’s black accents for more reserved body-coloured door mirror caps and chrome trim around the grille and windows, and adds key equipment including 18-inch aero-focused ‘Vega Aero’ alloy wheels, leather/suede combination upholstery, heated front and rear seats, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and automatic headlights and wipers.

It also gains a larger 9.2-inch infotainment display with satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay (with wireless Android Auto to follow later in 2020). Active safety kit exclusive to the Launch Edition consists of automatic parking assist, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Further details on the new Scala will be released closer to its official launch date, but Skoda has confirmed with CarAdvice that buyers can expect to see "the usual optional packages", including the Driver Support and Tech park for the 110TSI (which will include the LED headlights our readers have discussed below this story) and a Travel Pack for the Monte Carlo.

The 2020 Skoda Scala is available for order now, ahead of the model going on sale Down Under in June.
