The updated Audi R8 will arrive in the third quarter of 2020 packing a new rear-drive base model, new looks, and a sub-$300,000 price.
As the name suggests, it blends a slightly detuned version of the all-wheel drive car's engine with rear-drive. Peak power is pegged at 397kW and peak torque is 540Nm, put to the road through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and locking rear differential.
Without a front driveshaft, differential, and clever all-wheel drive clutches, the RWD is 55kg lighter than the heaviest all-wheel drive R8 V10 models.
Pricing kicks off at $295,000 before on-road costs for the coupe and $316,500 before on-roads for the convertible.
Sitting above the RWD is the range-topping, all-wheel drive R8 Performance Quattro. With all-paw traction comes more power and torque – 449kW and 560Nm to be precise – and a claimed 100km/h sprint time of just 3.2 seconds.
That's 0.5 seconds faster than the rear-driven model. Audi hasn't announced full specifications for the R8 yet, but says it plans to offer the "best interiors" as standard.
European cars get an extra 7kW, but they're also fitted with a petrol particulate filter. Audi Australia says the filter muffles some of the V10's distinctive sound, undermining its unique character.
"Every time we talk to R8 customers, [sound] is the number one thing they talk about," said Shawn Ticehurst, Audi Australia product planning and pricing director.
Expect to see extended leather trim on both models, while the range-topper will likely get lashings of carbon-fibre and Alcantara throughout its cabin.
Audi will reveal full pricing and spec information closer to launch in the third quarter of 2020.
