The Hummer name returns as rumoured, but with a little twist – or a lot of twist, if we're talking about the torque figures.

General Motors has confirmed its first-ever electric pickup truck will officially be known as the GMC Hummer EV.

The automaker also revealed the new Hummer will be available with a 746kW (1000hp) and 15,590Nm electric power system.

Although it isn't specified, that torque figure is likely a slightly misleading 'wheel torque' number instead of a true 'engine torque' output. In other words, it accounts for gearing as well as the motor's ability to turn the wheel – a trick used by a number of EV manufacturers to inflate their numbers.

This, presumably multi-motor all-wheel drive electric drivetrain, is capable of propelling the truck from 0-60mph (0-97km/h) in roughly 3 seconds.

By comparison, the range-topping variant of the upcoming Rivian R1T has 562kW/1120Nm ('engine torque') and a 0-60mph time of 3.0s, while the tri-motor version of the Tesla Cybertruck can complete the same dash in 2.9s.

As part of its promotion campaign, GMC will begin teasing the new model with an advertisement during this weekend's Super Bowl match.

The preview image released by GMC shows the truck's front end will have a full-width illumination strip broken up by a modern take on Hummer's seven-slat grille and prominent Hummer lettering accompanied by a tiny EV badge.

Further down the fascia, there's a small GMC badge to the corner of the vehicle's main air intake slot.

The GMC Hummer will be revealed on May 20, US time, at an event at in Las Vegas.

Earlier this week, GM confirmed the GMC Hummer EV will be built at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant from late 2021 after a US$2.2 billion ($3.3 billion) refurbishment and upgrade.

Rumours about the return of the Hummer nameplate have been circulating for a few months now. While Hummer was previously a standalone brand, it's now another model name in the GMC stable alongside the likes of Yukon and Sierra.

The Hummer name entered official use in 1992 when AM General began selling a road-legal civilian version of its military utility vehicle, the HMMWV, often referred to as the Humvee by soldiers.

GM purchased the brand in 1998, and soon added the smaller H2 and H3 models, which shared their platforms, respectively, with Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500 and Chevrolet Colorado utes.

During the General's spell in Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009, the company decided to close Hummer. Despite efforts to sell the brand off, no suitable buyer was found, and the marque was put into hibernation.
