2020 Mitsubishi ASX pricing and specs: AEB now standard

Pricing and specifications for the refreshed 2020 Mitsubishi ASX have finally been confirmed, with the updated range launching from $24,990 drive-away with standard autonomous emergency braking.

As previously reported, the facelifted ASX gets its most comprehensive design overhaul since it first debuted nearly a decade ago.

Key changes include a completely new nose with Mitsubishi's 'Dynamic Shield' design language – already seen on the Eclipse Cross, Outlander, Triton and Pajero Sport – incorporating new headlights, grille, bumpers, and fog-lights.

The changes are less pronounced at the rear, with new LED tail-lights and a revised bumper with skid plate insert.

Inside, all models get a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with DAB radio, while the flagship Exceed model adds a Rockford premium audio system and in-built TomTom navigation.

New safety technologies across the line-up include autonomous emergency braking and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, previously limited to the ADAS package which was optional on base variants.

There's still an extra-cost ADAS package for ES models ($2500), which brings the full gamut of assistance kit like lane departure warning, auto high-beam, reverse sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane change assist. Rounding out the optional pack are front fog-lights, door mirrors with turn indicators, rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

Changes have been made under the bonnet, too. Gone is the previous model's available 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, in its place a 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine shared with the larger Outlander.

Outputs are rated at 123kW and 222Nm, up 13kW and 25Nm on the base 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol. All versions bar the entry-level ES come with a CVT automatic as standard, with the price leader offering a five-speed manual.

Two new sport-themed variants will be available from December, too – the MR and GSR – reviving a pair of sporting badges for the Japanese brand. There's also a new Sunshine Orange (pictured) exterior paint option for GSR and Exceed models.

"The ASX is one of the most important cars in the Mitsubishi range. It has managed to outperform a number of its peers as one of the best cars in the segment," said Derek McIlroy, marketing and operations deputy director for Mitsubishi Australia.

"One of the reasons for this is that it has evolved with changes to interior and exterior styling, the addition of safety technologies and now the introduction of the 2.4L to the ASX range. We aim to ensure the ASX continues to meet the demands of our customers, allowing them to pack life in."

The MY20 changes should help maintain the ASX's dominance on the sales charts. So far in 2019 there have been 16,171 registrations year-to-date as of September 30, up 9.8 per cent on the same period last year, firmly cementing its place as Australia's favourite small SUV.
