2020 Volvo XC40 Electric to debut Android-based infotainment system

The Volvo XC40 Electric is set to become the one of the first production cars to feature an infotainment system powered by the Android Automotive operating system (OS).

By using a version of the popular smartphone OS for its underlying structure, the new Volvo infotainment setup comes as standard with Google Maps for navigation and the Google Assistant voice recognition system, which can be used to send text messages, play music from supported streaming services, alter the in-car climate control settings, set a new navigation destination or control smart devices at home.

It also has access to car-friendly apps within the Google Play Store. With built-in wireless connectivity, the new infotainment system can be updated via over-the-air software updates.

In addition to using Google's services and applications from the Android app store, the system also features Volvo On Call suite of services, which includes remote locking/unlocking, battery status monitoring, and cabin pre-heating.

Drivers can also use Volvo On Call to locate their vehicle, or setup a digital key for people renting the car via a vehicle-sharing service.

The XC40 Electric will be unveiled on October 16, European time. Volvo has already revealed its first pure electric model will have a "front trunk", a new Advanced Driver Assistance System, and alterations to its front and rear fascias.
