Hyundai's new coupe-hatchback has had its launch brought forward to the third quarter, after being delayed by 12 months due to production scheduling.

The new-generation Hyundai Veloster has had its launch timing changed once again, with its arrival brought forward to late in the third quarter of 2019.


UPDATE, 24/7/19: Hyundai Australia has confirmed all local versions of the Veloster will get the more dynamic suspension specification as standard (McPherson front, multi-link rear), unlike the previous generation and other models in the company's Australian stable.


After being delayed by over 12 months, Hyundai Australia has confirmed with CarAdvice the coupe-styled hatchback will arrive in Australian showrooms "late" in Q3, meaning August/September.

Final pricing and specifications are still to be confirmed, though the Korean brand has previously confirmed core models for our market – the Veloster and Veloster Turbo. The high-performance Veloster N remains left-hand drive only.

The entry-level model, simply named 'Veloster', is powered by the same 110kW/179Nm 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated Atkinson Cycle four that does service in the Kona crossover.

Drive is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. It's unclear whether Hyundai's local division will offer manual transmission options.

Stepping up to the Veloster Turbo swaps out the 2.0-litre for a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine shared with other models like the i30 N-Line and Elantra Sport, developing 150kW of power and 265Nm of torque.

The turbo motor also drives the front axle, via the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch auto with paddle shifters. Again, it's unclear whether both transmissions will be available locally.

Both models feature torque vectoring via braking, and a suspension system featuring McPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear setup, unlike the US where only the Turbo gets the more sophisticated chassis.

A key step up from the ageing previous-generation model is the availability of the company's latest driver assistance systems, including autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, high-beam assist, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Inside, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on entry-level variants overseas, while a larger 8.0-inch unit with native navigation is available on higher grades coupled with an eight-speaker Infinity sound system.

Other available goodies on the US model include a head-up display, and a wireless smartphone charging pad.
