Volkswagen is prepping its new ID.3 electric vehicle for a production debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, but it has another new EV up its sleeve.
"The commitment is that we start in the compact class, and the cars coming next are compact class cars," he said at the pre-booking launch for the ID.3 (pictured) in Europe.
"Frankfurt will be the reveal of the ID.3, and an idea of what’s coming next - and that’s clearly compact, because that’s what Volkswagen does."
Volkswagen has already confirmed the '3' signifies the ID.3's positioning as a compact car around the same size as the Golf, leaving room for smaller and larger models on each side.
Given the concept bound for Frankfurt will be "clearly compact", it will likely be named ID.1 or ID.2, and have a footprint similar to that of the combustion-powered Polo light hatch.
Stackmann added that while production versions of the ID. Crozz, ID. Buzz, ID. Vizzion concepts will be rolled out in the short- to mid-term, the company's commitment is 'firmly' on compact and affordable electric vehicles.
"In the long term we clearly need to scale down and be more aggressive on prices," he said.
"That will be a scale of industrialisation, and it will take some time until we bring it into classes."
It's believed the production version of the entry-level EV will come in at under £18,000 according to Autocar, which is the equivalent of $33,597.
Like the wider ID. range, the compact EV will ride on the company's MEB electric architecture, and feature an electric motor on the front axle paired to a battery capable of 'well over' the current e-Golf's 186-mile (299km) range claim.
Autocar claims the new entry-level electric vehicle, which is also expected to take on a crossover-like form, will be built at Volkswagen's Emden facility in Germany. The site currently manufactures the Passat and Arteon with a cap of 300,000 units per annum.
