Civic Type R v Defender V8 drag race – video
British-produced hot hatch takes on very special UK icon in straight-line duel – which is your pick?
The Honda Civic Type R has already proven itself performance king among front-drive hot hatches, so now it's looking for bigger fish to fry.
In what's one of the weirdest match-ups in drag race history, Top Gear has lined up the UK-built hatch against a Land Rover Defender – what?!
However, this isn't just any Land Rover Defender, in fact, it's the 297kW/515Nm Defender Works V8, a bespoke version of the iconic off-roader created by Jaguar Land Rover to commemorate the model's 70th anniversary.
The Defender sends all that grunt to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
By comparison, the Civic Type R makes 228kW/400Nm from its 2.0-litre turbo four, sent exclusively to the front axle through a six-speed manual and a mechanical limited-slip differential.
