2019 Skoda Scala previewed

All-new hatchback to be larger than a Golf and offer a range of new-age tech.

Skoda has issued some camouflaged images of the upcoming Scala hatchback, scheduled for a European market launch in the first half of 2019.

The first model in the Czech company's line-up to be based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB A0 platform – shared with the likes of the Volkswagen Polo – the Scala will roughly be the same size as a Volkswagen Golf, and sport a design inspired by the Vision RS concept shown at this year's Paris motor show.

It measures 4362mm long, 1793mm wide, 1471mm tall, with a 2649mm wheelbase. That makes the Skoda 104mm longer, 6mm narrower and 19mm higher than a Golf hatchback, while the wheelbase is 29mm larger than the Scala's German cousin.

Being based on the MQB A0 architecture, the Scala will offer a range of new technologies and driver assistance systems, including an available 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, central infotainment displays measuring up to 9.2 inches, along with a built-in eSIM allowing online services and an emergency call function – a first for Skoda.

Other features that will be available include full-LED headlights and tail-lights (including dynamic rear indicators, another company first), a retractable rear tow bar which can be operated by gesture control, and an electric tailgate.

As for assistance technologies, the Scala will be available with a suite of active safety systems including blind-spot assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control (up to 210km/h). Lane assist and autonomous emergency braking will be included as standard equipment, while an automated parking assistant will also be offered as an option.

Power will come from a choice of five different powertrains, all of which are said to be compliant with the latest Euro 6d-Temp emissions regulations, including three petrols (in various tunes) and one diesel. A compressed natural gas (CNG) unit will follow later in 2019.

Kicking off the petrol range is the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder petrol engine, available in 70kW and 85kW tunes, paired with a five-speed manual in low-output guise and the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG in high-output trim.

The flagship petrol offering is the company's 1.5 TSI four-cylinder unit, making 110kW and available with the choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG. All petrol engines are equipped with particulate filters.

Finally, the Scala's sole diesel option will be the 1.6 TDI four-cylinder oiler with 85kW and 250Nm, offered with both a six-speed manual ro seven-speed DSG.

After the initial launch, the 1.0 G-TEC CNG-compatible three-cylinder engine, which can also run on petrol. It will be available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, and put out 66kW.

Under the skin, the Scala will be available with two chassis tunes, 'standard' and 'Sport'. The latter rides 15mm lower than the regular version and offers an additional 'Sport' mode with valve-adjustable shock absorbers.

The Skoda Scala is expected to be revealed in full over the coming months. Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest.
