The fourth-generation Ford Focus has been unveiled after a seemingly endless series of leaks, teasers and spy photos.
Ford overnight revealed all three body styles of the new model at once. The hatch and wagon models are primarily aimed at European customers, while the sedan has its sights set on Asia and, presumably, North America.
In Europe, the new Focus will be available in a number of specialised trim lines: the sporty looking ST-Line, the luxury Titanium, the high-riding Active (below), and luxurious Vignale. China, at this stage, is only set to receive the ST-Line and Titanium trims.
As part of its cost-cutting drive, the company has reduced the number of available configurations, with some markets dropping from 360 to as low as 26.
Powertrains confirmed for the new Focus include the company’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder and 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engines, and the 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbo-diesel.
An eight-speed automatic transmission will be available as an option, complete with selectable shift speeds. Instead of the tradition gear shifter, automatic models utilise a rotary gear selector dial.
The company claims the new Focus has body that’s 20 per cent more rigid, and “remains true to its 20-year legacy of class-leading driving dynamics”. Electric power steering and three selectable driving modes (Normal, Sport and Eco) are standard.
Ford is yet to reveal the car’s exact dimensions, but the new Focus is claimed to have improved interior space, easier ingress and egress, and more cargo space despite its “overall dimensions [being] unchanged”.
With new “cab-rearward” proportions and a longer, flatter bonnet line, the latest Focus loses many of the design cues that have distinguished the first three generations.
On the safety and technology front, the new Focus is available with the company’s Co-Pilot360 safety suite, which depending on the trim level and region may include adaptive cruise control with speed sign recognition, lane centering, and stop and go functionality.
There’s also adaptive lighting with predictive curve and sign lighting, fully automated parking assistance, and evasive steering assist to help drivers get around slow or stopped vehicles.
For vehicles equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot and the new FordPass Connect system, owners will be able to remotely start their vehicle, check car stats, locate their vehicle, and lock and unlock doors from a smartphone.
Top-spec models also include Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring capability, and wireless smartphone charging.
Ford has today confirmed the new Focus will make its way to Australia in late-2018, although exact timing and details are still to be confirmed.
So far, though, the company has confirmed all versions headed Down Under will be made in Germany, feature autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection as standard, and offer adaptive cruise control with stop&go as an optional extra.
In terms of powertrains, Australian-bound Focuses will be offered with a pair of new-generation three-cylinder petrol engines, including an all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost unit. One will be naturally aspirated, the other turbocharged, and Ford will offer both with an eight-speed automatic.
