Kia SP concept revealed in Delhi

Bold crossover previews new production model

The Kia SP concept has been officially revealed at the 2018 Auto Expo in New Delhi, offering a look at a small SUV model aimed primarily at the Indian market.

According to the Korean manufacturer, the SP concept "provides a glimpse of what's in store for motoring enthusiasts once Kia kicks off retail sales in India" during the second half of 2019.

Kia says the bright orange SUV concept is "inspired by Indian heritage" and "driven by advanced technology", sporting a futuristic design that could preview the new direction for the brand's next-generation models.

It's almost Evoque-like at the front in terms of overall shape, while the two-tier headlight design is a cue first seen in parent company Hyundai's new SUV range.

While there are no images of the rear or the interior as yet, Kia says the cabin "marries an advanced sensual style and dynamic sensibility at its core," – nope, we aren't sure either...

The brand says the high-tech elements and contemporary interior layout make the SP concept an "oasis" for "young trend-setters".

"Combining the comfort and space of a sedan with the ability to tackle all kinds of terrain, we intend to storm the market with an SUV that will set new parameters in motoring," said Peter Schreyer, chief design officer for Kia Motors.

"It’s still a concept – so it’s a little bit exaggerated – but the actual production car will be very close to what you see here at Auto Expo 2018."

The SP concept will be shown at the Delhi event alongside a showcase of the brand's global model portfolio, including the Picanto, Rio, Cerato, Cee'd, Soul, Stinger, Sportage, Niro and Optima.
