On December 3, 2016, a LaFerrari was auctioned off for a staggering US$7 million (8.7 million), making it the most expensive car of the decade ever sold at auction. No doubt, Ferrari will be hoping to raise a similar amount for this worthy cause.
This latest event will be held on Ferrari’s own test track, Fiorano, and is part of the “Legenda e Passione” sale run by RM Sotheby’s. It’s also expected to be the most significant single marque collector’s auction in history.
For the auction, Ferrari chose to build something special for this cause, by creating a bespoke livery in metallic Rosso Fuoco, with a metallic Bianco Italia double racing stripe on the bonnet and down the rear of the car.
Even the interior is special, having been crafted in black Alcantara and glossy carbon-fibre, with red leather inserts and stitching on the seats.
The LaFerrari Aperta is the open-top version of the fabulous LaFerrari hybrid supercar – combining a naturally aspirated 6.3-litre mid-rear mounted V12, (producing 588kW at 9000 rpm and 700Nm of torque at 6750 rpm), with a 120kW KERS unit (called HY-KERS), for extra spurts of power. The total powertrain system claims to put out 708kW and 900Nm to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
On board, are 21 computers, controlling everything from active damping to active aerodynamics along with a host of other complex systems the car benefits from.
Performance is stratospheric, with Ferrari claiming acceleration from rest to 100km/h in just 2.4 seconds, and to 200km/h in under seven seconds. Top speed is 349km/h.
