Set to be the sportier coupe-like companion to the BMW X1 in the same vein as the X3/X4 and X5/X6 pairs, the new X2 will feature a more heavily raked tailgate design and sloping roofline.

As previewed by the BMW X2 concept at this year's Paris motor show, the X2 will deviate from the X4 and X6 in that it will still maintain an SUV-like profile - as opposed to the coupe-like roofline of the larger models.

Instead, the X2 will be more of a sportback, which should help it to be almost as practical as the closely-related X1.

Riding on the Bavarian company's UKL platform, the BMW X2 will share its underpinnings with the X1 along with the 2 Series Active Tourer and numerous members of the Mini line-up.

In terms of engines expect the X2 to largely mirror the range offered in the X1, which includes turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

Front- and all-wheel drive will be available depending on model, along with the option of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Expect the X2 to carry a $5000-$10,000 price premium over its X1 sibling when it hits local showrooms either late-2017 or early-2018.
