The Mitsubishi Pajero has been the flagship offering in the brand’s ranks for some time, and in its current generation it has been around for a decade, having been tweaked and massaged almost annually with more kit and pricing changes to keep things fresh.
But with internal competition from the impressive Triton-based Pajero Sport model – which isn’t too much smaller or less capable than the Pajero – it seems clear the Pajero model will eventually be squeezed out.
For reference, the Pajero measures 4900 millimetres long, 1875mm wide and 1900mm tall, and is available with an old 3.2-litre turbo diesel V6 engine with 147kW of power and 441Nm of torque.
The far newer Pajero Sport is powered by a 2.4-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder with 133kW and 430Nm, and measures 4785mm long, 1815mm wide and 1805mm tall.
Tsunehiro Kunimoto, corporate general manager of Mitsubishi Motors’ design office, told CarAdvice at the 2016 Paris motor show that the brand plans to “just keep the current” Pajero for now.
When asked if that meant keeping it forever, he replied, “I hope not!” with a chuckle.
“Because the market demand is very important,” he said. “Basically that category is very low key.”
We’ve heard this type of talk in the past, but Kunimoto’s push to create a range of more compact SUVs seems to have sealed the fate of the largest Mitsubishi model.
We’ll have to wait and see just when the plug is pulled on the V6 diesel model. Stay tuned.
