Australian pricing and details for the all-new 2016 Audi R8 V10 have been announced this week, after first being revealed just under one year ago.

The debut of this new-generation R8 range follows the 2014 launch of the R8 LMX, a swansong special-edition model limited to just 99 units - of which only three came to Australia.

Available this time in V10 form only, the new 2016 R8 range will kick off in Australia from $354,900 plus on-road costs for the R8 V10, while the more powerful R8 V10 Plus will be priced from $389,900 plus on-roads.


That pricing positions the new R8 V10 $12,000 below the $366,900 V10 that it replaces in the previous generation, while V10 Plus buyers will benefit from an $18,300 saving over the earlier R8 V10 Plus.

Perhaps of greatest interest to buyers will be in how the new Audi R8 compares with its stablemate the Lamborghini Huracan, which is priced in Australia from $428,000.

Both R8 models are driven by the same engine found in the Huracan, with the big 5.2-litre engine producing 397kW of power and 540Nm of torque in the R8 V10 - while the V10 Plus model dials outputs up to a Huracan-matching 449kW and 560Nm.


Matched exclusively to Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system and seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic, the R8 V10 promises a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds, while the V10 Plus sharpens the sprint to 3.2 seconds.

Top speed is listed at 320km/h for the V10 and 330km/h V10 Plus, with all of this coming together to form what the German car maker has declared the “fastest production Audi ever”.

Audi says fuel consumption with the R8 is improved by around 13 per cent over the outgoing model, which listed combined figures at around 12.9L/100km.


That improvement is thanks in part to cylinder-on-demand technology, along with direct- and multi-point injection, and a coasting mode that functions at speeds above 55km/h.

Standout features include a new water-cooled electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch in place of the viscous coupling in the old model, along with a free torque distribution design that can send 100 per cent of torque fore or aft as needed.

The quattro system is matched to Audi drive select, which offers selectable dry, wet and snow modes.

Braking is managed by 365mm steel discs with eight-piston calipers on the V10, while the V10 Plus gets 380mm carbon-ceramic rotors with six-piston grippers. Both get a four-piston setup at the rear.
