In Mercedes-Benz dealerships now is the mid-level S63 AMG Coupe, priced from $409,000 plus on-road costs. It will be joined in May by the entry-spec $319,000 S500 Coupe and the flagship twin-turbo V12-powered $499,000 S65 AMG Coupe.
The S500 Coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.7-litre V8 that produces 335kW and 700Nm. A nine-speed automatic transmission sends drive to the rear wheels. Launching to 100km/h from rest takes 4.6 seconds, while combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres.
Key standard features include 20-inch alloy wheels, intelligent lighting with full LED headlights, Magic Body Control active suspension with curve tilting function, semi-automated parking, panoramic sunroof, and the Comand Online infotainment system with 12.3-inch high-resolution display screen, satellite navigation with 3D mapping, digital radio and television tuner, 10GB media storage, DVD/SD card/USB inputs, and a touchpad finger gesture Comand controller. Full specifications of all variants are detailed below.
The S63 AMG Coupe upgrades to a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 with 430kW and 900Nm, and sends its power to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission. Accelerating to triple figures takes 4.2 seconds, while fuel use is rated at 10.2L/100km.
A host of AMG-specific features distinguish the S63 from the S500, such as unique 20-inch alloys and sports body styling, high-performance composite brakes with red calipers, sports suspension, sports exhaust, widened rear wheel arches, and exclusive AMG interior appointments.
The S65 AMG Coupe is powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 that pumps out 463kW and 1000Nm. It gets its own ‘Speedshift Plus’ seven-speed auto, and shaves one-tenth off the S63’s sprint time, stopping the clock at 4.1 seconds. Fuel use is rated at 12.0L/100km.
Additional features over the S63 AMG include 20-inch forged and ceramic-polished alloys, unique styling with twin-louvre front grille, head-up display, Night View Assist Plus, AMG sports seats with diamond-stitched nappa leather, Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system, and split-view infotainment screen with six-disc changer.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is 90mm shorter than the S-Class sedan, identical in width and 85mm lower, and has a 90mm-shorter wheelbase. The front track width is near identical, while the rear track is 12mm wider.
The coupe has three key unique selling points over the saloon. Magic Body Control is available in the sedan, but the coupe gets the additional curve tilting function, which leans the vehicle into a corner up to 2.65 degrees at speeds between 50-180km/h.
The coupe also gets an LED independent lighting system option, which features 47 Swarovski crystals in each headlight pod. There are 17 crystals for the daytime running lamps and 30 crystals for the indicators. Spend $4650 on the Nigh View Assist package and you can then spend another $5900 on the Swarovski crystals.
Thirdly, the coupe gets a panoramic glass sunroof that can be optioned with Magic Sky Control. The system can darken and lighten the tint of the glass to let more or less light into the cabin.
A key option pack is the Edition 1 package – available for both S500 and S63 AMG – and costs $12,238 and $9441 respectively. The package includes the high-end lighting system, exclusive leather interior trim, exclusive roof lining and black poplar high-gloss wood trim.
