Responding to a tweet from Manfred Hillinger, Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk, responded: "Roadster update details coming next week. Several crisis issues w higher priority pushed this out longer than expected."
At this year's shareholder meeting in June, Musk told the assembled investors and press: "We're going to do something cool with Roadster before the end of this year".
In August during an interview with AutoExpress, Tesla's outspoken boss went a step further: "The Roadster had an old generation battery. We’ll upgrade it to a new generation battery pack and it should have a range of about 400 miles [643 kilometres]."
That would be a significant boost over the battery fitted to the Roadster whilst it was on sale between 2008 and 2012. The Roadster's 53kWh lithium-ion battery pack was rated with an official range of 393km by the US government's Environmental Protection Authority.
It's unknown, at this stage, how much the mooted battery upgrade will cost owners of the Roadster or whether the upgrade will enable their cars to use the company's fast charging, and free, Supercharger network.
Based on the Lotus Elise, the Roadster featured a 215kW/400Nm electric motor in its most powerful guise. Equipped with this motor, the 1.2-tonne-plus Roadster was able to complete the 0-60mph (0-96km/h) standard in 3.7 seconds.
