The Subaru Levorg sports tourer wagon started pre-orders early January and managed to rack up an impressive 4,000 orders in its first two weeks. The partially Impreza-based Levorg, which sits somewhere between an Impreza and Liberty, will potentially have a category to itself when it hits the Australian market.
“For us, we are still pushing and mounting a business case to have the LeVorg, we (still) have no time table at this stage. We would love to have it, it was built for Australia” Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior told CarAdvice in California at the launch of the new Subaru WRX STI.
The Subaru Levorg borrows the front section of the current-model Impreza but the company insists that the rest of the wagon is unique.
Measuing a good 4690mm in lenght, the Levorg will fill a yet unoccupied space between the Impreza hatch and Liberty wagon in size. Its 2650mm wheelbase is 100mm shorter than the axle-to-axle distance of the Liberty wagon.
According to Senior, the Levorg would be an ideal fit for our local market.
“I think in terms of its performance, its versatility, its size, its overall package, it fits in with what I think is a potentially sweet spot in the market.”
Given it shares its front-end with the Impreza, it carries the new Subaru WRX engine (launching locally in March).
As with all Subarus but the BRZ, the Levorg pushed power to all four wheels and is available in its local market with a choice of a 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines.
Based on Japanese power figures (which use 100 RON fuel for testing), the 1.6-litre outputs 125kW of power and 250Nm of torque, while its bigger brother pumps out 221kW and 400Nm - which will likely be cut to 199kW for Australian market as per our fuel rating.
It will utilise continuously variable transmissions (CVT) instead of a traditional automatic gearbox.
CarAdvice suspects the new Levorg will make it to Australia in the first half of next year to accompany the all-new Subaru Liberty. It will be the first car that Subaru Australia has launched in some time which creates a new category of its own.
“I think its not a category killer because there’s not a category for it, but its a category innovator.”
The company has previously confirmed the LeVorg nameplate will remain for any global export.
Rumours have hinted at high performance STI variant for the LeVorg, although the company’s performance division denied there was a model in the works when quizzed by CarAdvice today.
