SUV: May sales overview
The new Mazda CX-5 continues to storm up the SUV sales charts, though it was the Toyota Prado that secured top honour in the latest monthly market results.
Toyota sold 1900 Prados in May, according to the latest official industry sales figures, extending the large off-roader’s overall lead for 2012 with 7707 units that equates to a year-on-year increase of 44 per cent.
It was followed in May by the CX-5 with 1680, the compact Mazda SUV’s strongest figure since going on sale earlier this year.
Third and fifth spots in the top 10 best-selling SUVs list were small-SUV twins from Nissan – the X-Trail (1518) and Dualis (1330), sandwiching another Toyota – the RAV4 (1356).
A quartet of Toyotas in the top 10 was completed by the Kluger (1193), which was pipped into 6th by its traditional large-SUV rival, the Ford Territory (1280), and LandCruiser, which was 9th with 962 sales.
The LandCruiser doubled its tally compared with May 2011.
The Ford Territory is the fastest-growing SUV of the top 10, increasing sales 73 per cent compared to this time last year and displacing the Falcon as Ford’s best-selling vehicle locally.
The locally built SUV is a commendable third overall, with the diesel engine introduced in 2011 continuing to bolster sales.
The Subaru Forester, the second most popular SUV in 2011 behind the Territory, was 8th in May with 1109 sales, and the soft-roader also slipped in year-to-date results, placing sixth with 4983 sales and a decrease of 7 per cent compared to May 2011.
The Hyundai ix35 completes the top 10 in both May and 2012 overall sales.
Honda’s CR-V, usually one of the staple choices of the SUV segment, has slumped 77 per cent year on year as the Japanese brand awaits a new-generation model that arrives soon.
Holden’s Captiva 7 sits just outside the top 10 with 4198 sales for 2012 so far.
